Traffic calming measures are needed in a Laois town to handle the increased traffic at the weekends.

Councillor Vivienne Phelan has requested Laois County Council to assess the need for traffic calming measures in Vicarstown , particularly given the range of community events and activities in the area at weekends.

The Fine Gael councillor raised the issue on behalf of residents in the area at the June meeting of the Graiguecullen/Portarlington MD.

“During the week it can be deceptively quiet out there, but at the weekends, Saturday and Sunday, you have the parkrun and the junior parkrun. You also have a coffee shop that’s very busy, the GAA Club, and there’s a lot of community events going on in Vicarstown,” Cllr Phelan told the council.

The 5km parkrun in Vicarstown takes place every Saturday at 9.30am at the Grand Canal Bank, and the 2km junior parkrun takes place every Sunday.

“The residents there feel that there is a need for additional measures to slow traffic. I’d appreciate that this be looked at.”

The Senior Executive Engineer for the district, Tom Drennan, told Cllr Phelan that Laois County Council will schedule an assessment to be carried out in accordance with its adopted policy on the selection and implementation of traffic calming measures in Vicarstown.
