Works near Ogonnelloe National School require funding allocation - Clare Echo

By Paige Foley · The Clare Echo · 15 October 2026

RESURFACING and drainage works outside Ogonnelloe National School are not covered by funding allocated for a road safety project in the village, but the council is exploring other sources of funding.

The issue was raised by Cllr Pat Burke (FG) at the September meeting of the Killaloe Municipal District.

Cllr Burke asked that resurfacing and drainage works be carried out in front of the school alongside works already planned under the Ogonnelloe Specific Improvement allocation, so that the overall job could be completed.

In a written response, Senior Executive Engineer Declan Flanagan said a phased programme of traffic calming works had been carried out in Ogonnelloe during 2024 and 2025, including raised tables, a raised zebra crossing, build-outs, road markings and infrastructure for future bus stop provision.

The final phase of the project is focused on safety around Ogonnelloe National School.

Mr Flanagan said €60,000 had been allocated for measures including upgraded road markings, virtual ramps, thermoplastic road markings, new footpaths, a disabled parking bay, dedicated school bus drop-off facilities and high-friction pedestrian walkways.

However, he said the approved funding was limited to traffic calming and road safety measures.

“The municipal district will continue to explore opportunities for alternative funding sources to support these works in conjunction with Ogonnelloe National School,” he said.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Burke called for discussions with the school to remain open.

He said he wanted the “whole lot to be done together” and noted that prices had “gone through the roof” .

Cllr Tony O’Brien (FF), Cathaoirleach of the Killaloe Municipal District, seconded the motion.

He said it “makes sense” to carry out the additional works while the contractor was on site.
