Heartfelt tributes have been paid to Antonia Edgeworth, who was tragically found dead on a Dublin street over the weekend.
Originally from Foxrock, Antonia was a former Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council staff member working in the library section. Independent Councillor Hugh Lewis extended his condolences to her family, friends and colleagues at last night’s October council meeting, where a moment's silence was held in her honour.
“She was very well known in the town. Antonia had a big personality - very caring, very kind, and she’d always have a friendly face any time you'd see her. I’d like to pass condolences onto her family and friends and indeed her former council staff colleagues, undoubtedly some of whom are still working in the council today,” he stated.
Described as a “lovely lady” with a “heart of gold,” many commented on social media of her kindness and generosity. One women revealed that she had recently spoken with Antonia in Dun Laoghaire. "She gave me a big hug and I told her to look after herself. So very sad. Condolences to all the family," she said.
One said they have not seen Antonia for decades but remembered fondly. "She was always very sound and up for a laugh," she said.
Another stated: "She was a great pal to me over the years, when my own dad passed away she sent a beautiful mass card it was probably the last few bob in her pocket at the time. I was so very grateful for it. That was her she would give anyone anything before herself."
Cllr Lewis described Antonia is “another victim of the housing crisis ” who demonstrates “the vulnerability that our homeless and rough sleepers face each night”. Further tributes poured out across social media, as locals shared fond memories of Antonia over the years.
The Foxrock/Deansgrange/Cabinteely Forum invited people to share their memories.
“Very sad news that Antonia Edgeworth passed away on Saturday night. Originally from Foxrock, she lived the last few years in and around O’Connell St, and was always in a good mood and up for a laugh. I’m sure there’s a few in this group who remember her from working in The Magic Carpet and might have a few stories to tell. A lovely lady, may she rest in peace,” the page stated.
