Call for loading bay to help Main Street businesses - Donegal News

CALLS have been made for a loading bay to be provided for businesses in Letterkenny.

This comes after it was claimed that some businesses in Lower Main Street have been issued parking fines for vehicles parked outside their premises.

The issue was raised at Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District (MD) by Sinn Féin councillor Gerry McMonagle.

He asked: “That our Roads Section provide a loading bay on Lower Main Street for businesses in that area and that our parking wardens refrain from issuing tickets to those businesses that have to park adjacent to their businesses to load and off load their products.”

Cllr McMonagle explained that he had been contacted by a long-standing business in that area which has been issued parking tickets while staff unload stock from their vehicles.

“They have to pull up outside the business sometimes and it takes time to unload,” he said. “They’re still getting tickets and that’s not good enough. They offer a fantastic service.”

He claimed that the issue has affected other businesses from the market square down to Lower Main Street.

The motion was seconded by Fine Gael councillor Jimmy Kavanagh.

Cllr McMonagle was told by council officials that an assessment can be carried out to identify a suitable location for a loading bay.

However, the official response noted that “the provision of every loading bay will reduce the number of available parking spaces by two.”
