Intoxicated Newtowncunningham man in care of young child found asleep under lorry

A NEWTOWNCUNNINGHAM man who was caring for a child was found to be intoxicated and asleep under a lorry last year.

Adam Devenney (32) of Hawthorn Hill, Newtowncunningham appeared before Letterkenny District Court last Monday. He was charged with being intoxicated in Altaghderry, Killea on July 4, 2025.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that Gardaí received a call on that evening that there was a man that appeared to be intoxicated and a young child nearby.

On arrival of the Gardaí a relative took the child away and arrested Devenney for his own safety, who they found asleep under a lorry.

Devenney appeared on his own behalf before Judge Emile Daly due to the ongoing legal aid dispute. He entered a guilty plea. Judge Daly asked him what his means were and he said he didn’t work and was in receipt of social welfare.

Judge Daly asked him if he had a drinking problem and he replied that “he accepts he drinks too much”. She asked the defendant does he need help with his issues with alcohol, and he responded “possibly but I don’t drink all the time.”

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that Devenney had no previous convictions in this jurisdiction but had five convictions from Derry’s Magistrates court, including a three month suspended jail sentence for assault and another matter in the Isle of Man.

Judge Daly convicted and fined Devenney €100 with four months to pay.
