Michael Maloney alleged murderer of Stephen McCahill Ardara

A man charged with the murder of Ardara businessman Stephen McCahill has been sent forward for trial at the Central Criminal Court.

Michael Maloney (32) of Loughros Point, Ardara, appeared in the dock in Letterkenny District Court on Monday after a book of evidence was served on him.

Maloney is charged with murdering McCahill at his home at Beagh, Ardara, on January 5 this year.

Maloney was arrested shortly after the alleged murder and has been remanded in custody in Castlerea Prison since.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to Maloney being sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court.

Detective Garda Alison Moore served the book of evidence on Maloney in Letterkenny Courthouse at 11.15am.

Judge Emile Daly gave the alibi warning. A section 56 order to provide his legal team with recorded interviews was also made.

Maloney’s solicitor, Mr Mark Mullaney, was granted legal aid and it was also requested for two counsels, given the seriousness of the murder charge.
