Concerns have been raised about suspicious people calling door to door in a Laois village.

The Laois Local Community and Safety Partnership held their first public meeting on Tuesday, September 8 at Laois County Council.

The meeting was attended by local councillors, TDs, members of An Garda Síochána, community groups and some members of the public.

At the meeting, a number of crime and safety issues were raised by councillors and the two attending TDs, Brian Stanley and Willie Aird.

Among the issues highlighted during the meeting was suspicious people calling door to door with flyers in Borris-in-Ossory .

Cllr Conor Bergin noted his concerns with the number of people calling to the homes of elderly and vulnerable people in the village.

Laois drivers can help raise funds for Irish Guide Dogs at car test event “We’re getting a lot of this in Borris-in-Ossory with people calling door to door and handing out flyers. A child could design them with AI in five minutes. These flyers are going around offering to tar your driveway and clean your gutters,” Cllr Bergin said at the meeting.

Adding to the suspicion surrounding these people, the LCSP committee member and Borris-in-Ossory councillor said that it is just vulnerable people they are calling to.

“They wouldn’t call to my door, they know the people to pick. They call to elderly and vulnerable people, people they know are on their own. They know who to target.

“I’ll say this, there’s no good tradesperson going door to door looking for work. Contact any tradesperson, they’re all busy and they’re not going door to door. It’s absolutely outrageous.”
