A Letterkenny man who drove without insurance to get to a jobseeker’s appointment has avoided being disqualified.

A LETTERKENNY man who drove without insurance to get to a jobseeker’s appointment has avoided being disqualified.

Sergeant Jim Collins told Letterkenny District Court on Monday how gardaí were on patrol on July 16, 2025 when the garda ANPR system detected a vehicle being driven without any insurance. Gardaí stopped the vehicle and spoke to its driver, Owen Doherty (40), 42 Mullagh Ban, Ballaghderg, Letterkenny. The court was told Doherty was fully compliant.

He has previous convictions but none for road traffic offences, Sergeant Collins told the court.

Solicitor Alison Parke said her client was driving to a jobseeker’s appointment at the time of the offence.

“He took a chance in order to get some income into his house, and he apologised for that.

“He is now working and has regularised his insurance. His family are wholly dependable on him as a driver to take them to medical appointments.”

Judge Emile Daly convicted and fined Doherty €600, and gave him six months to pay.
