Kildare County Council has issued an update on conservation works at a mausoleum.

The matter was raised at the latest Clane -Maynooth Municipal District meeting, which took place on Friday, September 4 last.

Near the end of this meeting, Independent councillor Pádraig McEvoy asked Kildare County Council to provide an update on the works taking place at the Wogan Browne Mausoleum in the Mainham region of Clane.

In response to his query, Kildare County Council issued a lengthy report.

It read as follows: “Kildare County Council has continued to progress the next phase of conservation works to the Wogan Browne Mausoleum, [which is] a Protected Structure under the care of Kildare County Council.

“Local Property Tax was allocated by the Clane-Maynooth Municipal District to facilitate these works.”

Cllr Pádraig McEvoy (Independent) | PHOTOGRAPH CREDIT: KILDARECOCO.IE Kildare County Council continued: “To advance the project, Kildare County Council appointed Blackwood Associates Architects to provide conservation architectural services and project management for the works.

“A specialist conservation contractor was appointed in April 2026 appointed following a competitive tender process.

“The planned conservation programme has been developed in accordance with the previously completed Conservation Report and Framework Plan for the structure.

“The works are focused on addressing ongoing water ingress issues and stabilising the building fabric to ensure its long-term conservation.”

Kildare County Council elaborated: “As the mausoleum is a protected historic structure located within an archaeologically sensitive setting, certain elements of the works require the appropriate consents and licences, including archaeological oversight and agreement from the National Monuments Service.

“The project team has been progressing these requirements alongside the detailed design and procurement stages.”

Kildare County Council concluded by asserting: “The Heritage and Nature Unit will continue to oversee delivery of the project and will provide further updates to members as the works progress.”
