Veteran Mayo County Council official retires after 41 years service

The Tipperary native served as Director of Services with Mayo Council since 2017, overseeing key areas including Water Services, Elections, and the Castlebar Municipal District

Mayo County Council has announced the retirement of John Condon, Director of Services, bringing to a close a distinguished 41-year career in local government.

Mr Condon, who originally hails from Tipperary, has served as Director of Services since 2017, overseeing key areas including Water Services, Environment, Climate Change and Agriculture, Emergency Services, Elections, and the Castlebar Municipal District.

His extensive career in public service saw him work across multiple local authorities, including Dublin City Council, Kildare County Council, and both Athy and Castlebar Town Councils. Prior to his appointment as Director of Services, he held the position of Senior Executive Officer with Mayo County Council.

News of Mr Condon's retirement was formally communicated to Mayo County Councillors today, prompting tributes from elected representatives who praised his professionalism and expertise.

Cllr Michael Loftus described Mr Condon as leaving "a legacy of professionalism, integrity, and deep knowledge of local government," noting that his expertise in rules and procedures was sought after by local authorities nationwide.

Mayo woman Lucy Fabby was one of three representatives from the National Greenway Action Association group to speak before the committee during the morning session. Councillor Harry Barrett paid tribute to Mr Condon's character and service, describing him as "a pillar of honesty and integrity, whose words carried weight because of the huge trust people had in him."

"John Condon dedicated his life to public service and left Mayo better than he found it," Cllr Barrett said. "You'll be missed."
