Longford records lowest level of emergency accommodation usage in the Midlands

Longford recorded the lowest figure in the Midlands with regard to the number of people accessing state-funded local authority emergency accommodation from March 23-29.

This is according to a breakdown of data as outlined in the Monthly Homelessness Report released today by the Department of Housing.

The report shows that 21 people accessed emergency accommodation in Longford last month, compared to 60 in Westmeath, 66 in Laois, and 78 in Offaly.

Of the 225 currently in emergency accommodation, 168 are of Irish citizenship. 29 were from the UK / EEA (European Economic Area meaning the 27 EU countries and Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein).

28 of those in the emergency accommodation were recorded as non-EEA citizens.

The figures show that while homelessness remains a significant national issue, levels vary considerably across the country.

Nationally, more than 17,000 people were living in emergency accommodation during March, including families and children.

Dublin remains the county with the highest concentration of emergency accommodation usage, according to the latest figures.
