Cllr Phelan highlighted how popular the blueway is with cyclists

Joshua McCormack ADDITIONAL signage is needed for a stretch of the blueway cycling route that runs through Vicarstown as visitors to the county are unaware of traffic crossing, the latest meeting of Portarlington/Graiguecullen municipal district has heard.

The motion was brought to the June meeting by Cllr Vivienne Phelan following a recent meeting she had with locals in Vicarstown, where concerns were raised. In response, a representative of the area office said they would issue a letter to Waterways Ireland about the issue.

Explaining the impetus behind the motion, the Cllr Phelan highlighted how popular the blueway is with cyclists and said that particularly heading into the busy summer tourism season it is important to update the signage.

Cllr Phelan said: "You may not be aware of the oncoming traffic going over the hill. It's just a matter of road safety letting cyclists who are out enjoying themselves know that they do need to stop and slow down before hitting the road."
