“There is a need for something to be put in place”

THE pressures that have come with housing development in a Kildare town were highlighted at a recent meeting, where a councillor called for road safety works near new homes to alleviate the impact on road users.

Cllr Pat Balfe brought forward a motion at the most recent meeting of Kildare-Newbridge Municipal district proposing that the council carries out a road safety audit on the Rathangan Road (R414) at the entrance to Monasterevin approaching Ball Alley Crossroads and the adjoining Oldgrange Manor housing development.

Cllr Balfe also sought that the council outlines any existing or proposed traffic calming and road safety measures to alleviate the impact of the new development on road users.

Senior executive officer Mark McLoughlin issued the council’s response, which stated that there are no plans for works at the location. The report added that the transport department will look into the matter and will consider action if it believes works are necessary and funding can be secured.

Cllr Balfe expressed his view that “there is a need for something to be put in place” at the location.
