Alleged Donegal rapist sent to Central Criminal Court

A NORTH Donegal man has been sent forward to the Central Criminal Court to face 18 serious charges against a woman, including sexual assault, rape and threatening to kill.

The man in his 40s, cannot be named for legal reasons, including protecting the anonymity of the alleged victim.

The charges include rape, several sexual assaults, coercive control, false imprisonment, arson, several assaults causing harm, threatening to kill, threatening to damage property, several causing criminal damage, and breaching a safety order.

The defendant appeared via video link from Midlands Prison at Letterkenny District Court on Monday.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to the accused being sent forward to the Central Criminal Court for trial.

Garda Pauline Doherty gave evidence of serving a book of evidence on defendant’s solicitor, Mr Frank Dorrian, at Letterkenny courthouse.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that there were 19 matters, one that is not nominated in the book of evidence, and 18 going forward. The court heard that the High Court had refused bail in the case due to the seriousness of it.

Judge Emile Daly administered the alibi warning, gave the defendant 14 days to respond to the alibi warning, and made a Section 56 order relating to interviews.

Legal aid was granted to Mr Dorrian. He requested two legal counsels given the nature of the charges.
