“Why do we need ID?” Your questions about Longford's hazardous waste drop-off event answered

Longford County Council have responded to questions asked by readers of the Longford Leader regarding the upcoming Hazardous Waste Collection event which is set to take place this Saturday, May 2, in Longford town's Pearse Park.

Readers were particularly interested to know why they were obligated to bring photo ID and proof of address when dropping off items at the event.

In response, Longford County Council, said, "The Hazardous Waste collection is heavily subsidised by Longford County Council, and the collection is for Longford residents only."

"Proof of address and Photo ID is required to confirm Longford residency."

The second question which arose a number of times was the €1 charge and if it applied to all items being dropped off?

Longford County Council replied, "The charge of €1 applies for paint etc. However some people bring along batteries, and perhaps other items which Hazport don’t generally take."

"For example Lithium-ion batteries which are widely used in smartphones, laptops, power tools, and other rechargeable devices."

They added, "These batteries are highly efficient but require careful recycling due to their chemical composition, which includes valuable materials like lithium and cobalt. If those items are accepted, an additional charge may be applied."

"Other batteries may be accepted at a reduced price. The collection will also take used medicines, which again the Hazport team assess in terms of cost of disposal."

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection will take place this Saturday, May 2, from 10am-12pm, in Pearse Park, (lower car park, near rugby club entrance.)
