Joan Geraghty A North Mayo councillor has asked for speed ramps or raised pedestrian crossings to be installed on the Main Street in Ballycastle in order to slow traffic through the town.

Cllr Jarlath Munnelly raised the matter at the June meeting of Ballina Municipal District, stating: “The speed of trucks, particularly some timber trucks that come through the town of Ballycastle, I am told there is no slowing down.”

Cllr John O’Hara agreed it is a dangerous location and that some proper safety measures are needed, especially at the bottom of the hill where the church and school are and where children walk straight across the road.

Cllr Annie May Reape added that a lot of traffic is going through the location and on to the Céide Fields, saying: “Ballycastle is a fabulous town and now a beautiful restaurant has opened there as well. But traffic just drives straight through. I think they forget there is a town there at all so something needs to be done.”

Area Engineer Teresa Durkin said Mayo Co Council would carry out some speed surveys at the location and assess what works can be done, which she said would take a few weeks to do. Executive engineer Vincent O’Boyle added that the council will carry out a speed survey on the R314 in Ballycastle within the 50km/h speed limit zone to assess the actual speed of vehicles.
