'Absolute lies': Kildare representative shuts down false claims made about her

The incorrect information made the rounds on social media

A Kildare county councillor has called out false claims which were made about her and shared on social media.

The false information related to Fianna Fáil Cllr Veralouise Behan, who represents the Athy Municipal District.

An online group falsely claimed that Cllr Behan had called for ‘future developments for houses to be made to suit Muslim individuals, to suit their way of life’.

The same group took issue with this (falsified) view while also highlighting the presence of homelessness in Ireland.

When asked by the Leader for comment, Cllr Behan responded: “It’s like this; when a person or an organisation blatantly lies about you and involves others to collaborate and believe those lies, it speaks volumes about the extraordinary ability of some groups to exploit and manipulate people into targeting, in my case, a woman.

“Right now, across the country, there are thousands of people believing absolute lies about me.”

She continued: “As a girl and as a grown woman, I’ve experienced this kind of attempted intimidation long before I ever became an elected representative; it predominantly came from boys and men who would make up lies to boost their status and generally use, a woman’s name in doing so, although that’s a patriarchal system defect and a conversation for another time.

“Thankfully, there are sound men and women who fact check instead of blindly believing, factless, faceless baseless liars.”

Cllr Behan pointed out: “A professional journalist would have picked up such a remark if it was made at an MD meeting, and the full council ones are webcast, so all spoken words [from councillors and KCC representatives] are public knowledge.”

Furthermore, she shared a lyric from the song ‘Liontamer’ by the late musician Maxi Jazz (of Faithless fame), which she believed related to her experience: “If you place a thing into the centre of your life that lacks the power to nourish / It will eventually poison everything that you are, and destroy you.”

Lastly, Cllr Behan took time to highlight to the Leader concerns which she had previously voiced to KFM last month.

During this guest appearance, she claimed that some people had suffered ‘inter-generational trauma’ as a result of buildings in Athy not being soundproofed.
