The 22-year-old appeared before Letterkenny District Court on Monday charged with driving without insurance.

A MOTORIST has been fined €350 for driving his new car without insurance.

Subhan Ullah Shirzad appeared before Letterkenny District Court yesterday charged with driving without insurance.

The 22-year-old, of McClure’s Terrace, Letterkenny, told the court he had bought a new car and called an insurance company twice.

He accepted that he was driving without insurance and pleaded guilty, without the advice of a solicitor.

The court heard that Shirzad was stopped by gardaí at 11.25am in Kilmacrennan on January 13 last.

A lawful demand was made to produce insurance documents which Shirzad failed to do.

The accused said he would bring the documents to Letterkenny Garda Station but no documents were produced.

Judge Emile Daly told Shirzad that as he had no previous convictions the court had discretion not to disqualify him.

She asked the defendant if he worked. He said he worked in a hotel and needed his car to get to work.

Judge Daly said she would not disqualify him on the basis that he had no previous convictions.

She imposed a fine of €350 and allowed him four months to pay.
