‘Fresh look’ needed at road works delivery in Donegal - Donegal News

A “fresh look” at the delivery of road works is needed in Donegal, it has been claimed.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Ciaran Brogan made the comments at the July plenary meeting of Donegal County Council.

He asked for a review of the Roads & Transportation Directorate in light of the “massive area” of road works across the county.

“In total, we have almost 7,000 kilometres of roads between the national primary, national secondary and our local and national roads, and we have had programmes in place for this whole area of roads for a long time,” he said.

“I think we need to change and adapt and review our focus and direction in all these areas. I think it’s time for a fresh look at the directorate.”

Cllr Brogan added that there were “far more outdoor staff” in the council working on local roads some years ago.

The motion was seconded by Fianna Fáil Cllr Martin McDermott.

In an official response, the council said it would engage with relevant stakeholders to agree terms of reference for a review.

It reads: “Donegal County Council completed an organisational review during 2025 with input sought from Elected Members, staff and unions. The outcome of this review was provided earlier this year and resulted in changes to the structure of the Council’s directorates which have now been implemented.”
