Book of Condolence for Glen Hansard to be opened in the Mansion House

The Lord Mayor has opened a Book of Condolence following the tragic death of Dublin musician Glen Hansard, with an in-person book available in the Mansion House tomorrow and Friday, from 10am–4pm each day.

Dublin City Council has opened a Book of Condolence following the tragic death of Glen Hansard in the early hours of this morning.

Tributes have poured across the country for the 56-year-old Dublin musician with Lord Mayor Daryl Barron issuing a statement that he is “absolutely stunned” by the news of a single vehicle road traffic collision in West Dublin. The collision occurred on Lower Road, Strawberry Beds, Lucan, between Tinkers Hill (R121) and Rugged Lane at 4.30am.

“Words fail us at a time like this but on behalf of all the citizens of Dublin I want to extend my sincere condolences to Glen’s family and friends," The Lord Mayor said.

“From Outspan Foster in The Commitments, to lead singer in The Frames, his Oscar win for the song ‘Falling Slowly’, and his work in the community especially around the Christmas Eve Busk for the Dublin Simon Community, Glen will be remembered very fondly by generations of Dubliners.

“Glen and The Busk received a Lord Mayor’s Award in 2024 for their work in helping the homeless.”

An online Book of Condolence has been opened on the Dublin City Council website, and an in-person book will be available in the Mansion House tomorrow and Friday, from 10am–4pm each day.

Hansard suffering a collision while travelling on a motorcycle was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later. Confirming his death this morning, his management team said: "With broken hearts we announce the passing of Glen Hansard who passed away, in the early hours of this morning, following a road traffic accident in Dublin.

"Glen's family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this tragic loss and respectfully requests privacy at this extremely difficult time. The family is grateful for the support they have received and wishes to thank the emergency services who attended the scene.

"As this matter remains the subject of an active Garda investigation, no further comment will be made at this time."
