Planning permission sought for major revamp of Tirlán premises in Laois

Tirlán in Abbeyleix has submitted a planning application to demolish the existing shop and office building in order to construct a new shop and office building as well as a carparking area.

Formerly Glanbia and Avonmore, Tirlán has been in operation in Raheen, Abbeyleix since 1957 and the current agri store and office building on the L2690 road was constructed in 1970.

The original building was eventually declared structurally unsound and no longer fit for purpose, with the building closing around 12 years ago. The farm shop then began operating out of a portacabin on the site.

The application also seeks to demolish the weighbridge control building, overground grain silos and a portion of the front boundary wall.

The weighbridge control building used to facilitate the intake of grain from local tillage produce but this is no longer part of the business in Raheen and so the planning documents state it is no longer needed. Weighbridges can now also be operated from sales counters, meaning a separate building is not required.

Also included in the proposal is the development of a new wastewater treatment system and percolation area, the re-alignment of the front boundary, the erection of new security fencing and gates, as well as all associated ancillary development works.

According to the planning documents: “The project will involve significant temporary construction measures such as site hoarding, fencing, scaffolding etc to facilitate the demolition and reconstruction of the building while keeping the premises open to the public.

“The proposed development is a major capital investment for the applicant and is a commitment of the existing facility towards a sustainable future for the environment along with the business, its employees and the local community. The proposed development will ensure the facility will remain open whilst providing a valuable service to the local farming community.”

Laois County Council are due to make their decision on the planning application by August 1.
