Man sent to Circuit Court on big money laundering charge at credit union in Offaly

TWO people accused of offences under the Money Laundering Act have been ordered to appear before Tullamore Circuit Court next week.

Margaret Cawley (30), 50 Puttaghaun, Tullamore and Martin Cawley (31), of the same address appeared before Judge Andrew Cody at the local District Court on Wednesday.

Garda John Crowley gave evidence of serving books of evidence on Margaret and Martin Cawley, saying the DPP had directed that they be sent for trial at Tullamore Circuit Court sitting on June 3.

Garda Crowley said both are on bail and could go forward to the Circuit Court on the same conditions.

David Nugent , BL (instructed by Aisling Maloney, solicitor) appeared for both defendants and applied for legal aid, with counsel.

Mr Nugent said a significant amount of money was involved in the alleged offences. Margaret Cawley was on social welfare and was receiving €312 per week while Martin Cawley had been receiving €242 a week but the social welfare payment had been stopped.

Judge Cody sent both accused to Tullamore Circuit Court on June 3 and also granted them legal aid.

Margaret Cawley is accused of offences involving the proceeds of crime on various dates in 2022 and 2023, including the possession of a Louis Vuitton bag and belt at a flat above Eclipse, Harbour Street, Tullamore.

One of the charges alleges the possession of €3,090 in cash and others relate to money credited to AIB and Revolut accounts.

One of the charges against Martin Cawley relates to the possession on December 31, 2023 at Tullamore Credit Union of €65,352.56 held in an account number with his name.

Another charge relates to an offence involving €9,390 allegedly committed on March 8, 2024 at Durrow Abbey, Tullamore.

Other charges involve separate amounts of €755 in cash at O'Connor Square, Tullamore and €3,090 cash at the flat over Eclipse.
