Public safety message issued in Laois due to ‘severe weather’

A public safety message has been issued by Laois County Council due to the severe high temperatures across the county and potential thunderstorms.

As temperatures hit highs of 30 degrees in parts of Laois on Thursday, June 25, Met Éireann has extended its Status Yellow high temperature warning for the county and rest of the country.

The high temperature warning has been in place since Tuesday, June 23 and was initially due to end on Friday morning, June 26. This has now been extended until 9am on Saturday morning, June 27.

Amid the challenging heat, Laois County Council issued a public safety message regarding “potential severe weather .”

In a post on social media, the council said: “Today, it is possible that parts of Ireland will experience record high temperatures and this presents potential risks.

“In particular, the public is reminded to keep hydrated, stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, avoid strenuous activity and not to leave people and animals unattended in vehicles for any period of time.”

In addition to the high temperatures, Met Éireann has warned about the potential for severe thunderstorms and torrential downpours, localised flash flooding, large hail and damaging wind gusts.

“This risk exists for all of Ireland, but with a higher potential for impacting on the Midlands, west and north west this evening and into Friday. The public is therefore encouraged to remain weather aware and be prepared to take action if conditions deteriorate in their area,” the council said.

Laois County Council advised that if thunderstorms do develop, people should move indoors immediately once they hear thunder. People should also seek shelter if lightning develops.

The public has also been advised to avoid driving if necessary if heavy rain begins and to find alternative routes if roads become flooded.

“Never drive, walk or cycle through floodwater. Heavy rainfall can cause dangerous flash flooding with little warning,” the council added.
