A Donegal man has been charged with over 20 sexual offences against a child.

The man, who is in his 30s and cannot be named for legal reasons due to the nature of the charges, appeared at Letterkenny District Court.

The man is facing 23 charges and will be sent forward to the Central Criminal Court later this year.

He has been charged with one count of rape contrary to section 48 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Act 1981, as amended by section 21 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act 1990. That is in relation to an alleged offence from 2017.

He has been charged with 22 other offences of engaging in a sexual act with a child under the age of 17. These charges are contrary to section 2 (1) of the Sexual Offences Act 2006 as substituted by section 16 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, 2017.

These charges are in connection with offences alleged to have occurred in 2017 and 2018 within County Donegal.

Evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of the man was handed into the court.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed trial on indictment in the Central Criminal Court.

Disclosure is to be given to the man’s solicitor and the case was adjourned to October for a book of evidence to be served.

The man was remanded on bail by Judge Emile Daly on condition that he surrender his passport, sign on at a Garda station once a week, that he not interfere with any alleged victims or witnesses in the case and commit no further offence.
