The issue of the grass verges near the Mart in Drumshanbo being destroyed by parking was raised at this week's meeting of Ballinamore Municipal District.

Cllr Enda McGloin (FG) tabled a motion, in which he called for a “street kerbing” plan in the area.

“Currently, the side verges as destroyed due to vehicles parking on or over them. The condition of the roadside is very poor in and around this area of Drumshanbo,” according to his motion.

“Kerbing being put in place would stop the grass margin being destroyed,” Cllr McGloin told the meeting.

“People parking across from the mart are destroying the grass,” he added.

Cllr McGloin went on to say that work of local people was being affected by the parking.

“The work being done by Tidy Towns and CE schemes is being frustrated by this parking,” he stated.

He went to say that he was hoping that farmers parking for the mart, “would be aware of their surroundings.”

“It is great to see commercial activity at the Mart. However, the downside is the damage being done to the grass verges. Perhaps some controlled parking would help, where the farmers would be cajoled into parking away from the green areas,” he explained.

In response, District Engineer Emma Donohue told the meeting that, “all the great work being done in this area by locals is noted.”

The written response from the council, “this section of the R208 on the Mart Road, Drumshanbo, will be assessed for the suitability of kerbing.”
