It has been announced that another school in Laois has been granted a special classroom for children with autism for the coming school year.

Dunamase College in Portlaoise has been allocated an additional Autism inclusive classroom for September.

The secondary school will repurpose an existing classroom to accommodate the changes.

Dunamase College is the fourteenth school in Laois to be allocated new special classes for September 2026.

Of these, five other schools in Portlaoise have been given new special classes including Gaelscoil Phortlaoise, Scoil Bhride, Holy Family Junior School, Holy Family Senior School and St. Mary’s CBS.

The other schools in Laois to receive new classes include St Paul’s NS in Mountmellick, Presentation Primary School and Scoil Phádraig in Portarlington, Ballylinan NS, Scoil Naomh Eoin in Killenard, Scoil Mhuire in Abbeyleix, Our Lady’s Meadows NS in Durrow and Heywood Community School in Ballinakill.

Laois TD Sean Fleming has welcomed the announcement of additional ASD classes in Laois.

Commenting on the addition for Dunamase College, Deputy Fleming said: “This will be very welcome for the pupils, families and the school communities.

“I look forward to this new class being in place which will involve the employment of additional staff in these schools.”
