MAYO ROUTES: News Mayo County Council reveals Winter Service Plan ahead of cold snap By Oisín Bradley Published 20th Nov 2025, 10:00 BST As freezing weather and icy conditions bear down on the country, the Council have reiterated their framework for action With a cold snap on the agenda and Winter looming large, Mayo County Council have moved to reiterate their Winter Service Action Plan for 2025.

In a document titled 'Winter Service Plan', the objectives of the Council are clarified. The aim is simple, to allow safe passage of vehicles and pedestrians, and minimise delays due to Winter weather.

The Council has also stressed that 95 percent of local roads are not salted, as well as ten percent of regional roads.

The tiered treatment of roads for snow and ice is as follows:

Priority One: National primary and secondary roads as well as the R-376 between Ireland West Airport and the N17.

Priority Two: Strategically important regional and local roads.

Priority Three: Urban footpaths, cycleways, and other regional and local roads.

Ireland West Airport and Barnacarroll Hill on the N17 are to receive additional salting due to the altitude of both locations. Lough Mask water treatment plant is also due for additional salting due to its importance.

A total of 60 people will operate the 23 salt spreaders across the county.

Major strategic locations will be given preference, such as hospitals, Westdoc facilities, fire stations, Ireland West Airport, train stations, bus depots, and all major industries.
