A call has been made for a new height-restriction barrier at Inver Beach, Drumbeg, following concerns about the growing number of campervans using the public car park.

Sinn Féin Cllr Noel Jordan raised the issue at today’s meeting of the Municipal District of Donegal, saying there had been a “huge problem all this season” of the area becoming badly congested when campervans are parked there.

“It’s a bottleneck,” Cllr Jordan said, adding that there was “nowhere to turn” in the confined car park.

He said the situation was unfair on local residents and people who regularly use the beach, including older people who walk in the area every day.

Cllr Jordan said what had previously been “one or two” campervans had increased to as many as “nine or ten” at a time this summer.

“It's a public car park and a public road, but you can’t even turn in the car park,” he told the meeting.

He asked Donegal County Council to install a height restriction barrier, saying “something has to be done before next summer comes in.”

Environmental Awareness Officer Rosita Mahony said she would bring the proposal back to the department.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Jordan pointed out that designated campervan facilities are available elsewhere locally.

“We’ve had a recent new campervan site in Mountcharles, which is in the parish itself, and also there’s a campervan site in Spierstown as well,” he said.

Cllr Jordan said some campervan users did not appear to be using those facilities and had instead discovered Drumbeg this year "all of a sudden".

He described Drumbeg as “a beautiful beach” with “lovely views”, but said the growing numbers were creating problems.

“When one comes along, another nine or ten comes along,” Cllr Jordan said.

He added that campervan users “could be using the new one that’s put in place in Mountcharles, but they’re not, unfortunately.”
