‘Children at risk’ due to speeding at Letterkenny housing estate

Calls were made to install traffic-calming measures at a Letterkenny housing estate.

Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry McMonagle submitted the motion at the July meeting of the Letterkenny/Milford Municipal District.

Councillor McMonagle requested that traffic calming be installed at Ashfield, Carnamuggagh in the interest of children’s safety, based on residents’ request.

“There are over 100 houses on one straight road,” Cllr McMonagle said. “Speed cameras have been installed and 85% of vehicles are over the speed limit. Residents are saying children are at risk and this has been supported by the cameras.

“We are down to a funding issue again. God forbid if a child gets knocked down again. I'm hoping the money can be found based on the evidence they have.”

Senior Executive Engineer, David McIlwaine, responded that the area is well assessed, and we need to see where there are funding opportunities.

A speed assessment has been completed, and it has been established that traffic-calming measures would be appropriate. Options for traffic-calming measures such as chicanes or raised tables are being considered.

Currently, there is no funding available to carry out these works. If funding becomes available, design and construction works will be progressed.
