Councillors back Ballina Motor Tax Office after strong year - news - Western People

Charlotte Davis More than €1.5 million was collected by the Motor Tax Office in Ballina between June 2025 and June 2026.

Over the same period, the office processed more than 10,800 transactions.

Presenting the report, Head of the Ballina Municipal District Anna Connors, told councillors that monthly transaction numbers ranged from 668 in November 2025 to a high of 994 in May.

“If you average that out, there’s around 880 to 900 transactions here every month in the office. That is quite strong,” she said.

Welcoming the figures, Cllr John O’Hara said the Motor Tax Office is an essential service for Ballina and expressed hope that it would remain in the town.

“It is essential to this town to have the office there and I hope it stays there,” he said.

Cllr O'Hara said people can be going back and forth over email or phone three or four times to get answers to their queries, but that when people “go down to that office they give a bit of time to you and help you get whatever you need".

Cllr Annie May Reape agreed, saying many people still prefer to deal with someone in person rather than online.

“There’s a lot of advantages to having the office. Long may it continue,” she said.
