Call to ‘reinstate safe overtaking areas’ between Letterkenny and Fintown

The road markings on the main R250 road from Letterkenny to Fintown will be reviewed.

This follows a motion by Fianna Fáil Councillor Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly, who outlined that broken white lines should be reinstated to permit overtaking.

“Through the years, different sections of this road have been resurfaced,” Cllr Kelly said. “After these works, the broken white lines were reinstated as continuous white lines.

“From the White Stone to Larkins was always deemed safe for overtaking and it is now a single white line. Now, we are seeing a lot of cars overtaking here, and if the broken lines were reinstated, it could alleviate the problem.

“Could this be reviewed again and if anything can be done to reinstate safe overtaking areas?”

Senior Executive Engineer, David McIlwaine, responded that the standards have been in place for a long time, but a review will be carried out. “We carry out a design review and we are required to follow that, where the lines have to be continuous and where they can be broken. If the review meets the criteria, maybe we could use double white lines as that is the only way around it.”

The road markings have been laid in accordance with chapter seven of the Traffic Signs Manual.
