Civic reception proposed for Mark English - Donegal News

By Naomi Hamilton O'Donnell · Donegal News · 3 September 2026

A CIVIC reception has been proposed for Donegal gold-medal winning athlete Mark English.

The proposal was put forward by Cathaoirleach Patrick McGowan at the meeting of Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD) yesterday.

English, who is from Letterkenny and is a member of Finn Valley AC, recently became the first Irish man to win a gold medal at the European Athletics Championship.

The 33-year-old had already won five European medals before setting a championship record in his semi-final and taking the gold in the final.

Fianna Fáil Cllr McGowan said: “The club asked me if he could be honoured with a countywide Civic Reception.”

The proposal was seconded by Fine Gael councillor Martin Harley.

Sinn Féin councillor Gary Doherty said he would bring the call for the civic reception to the next meeting of the Corporate Policy Group (CPG) to be confirmed by Donegal County Council.
