A Donegal man has appeared in court charged with eight counts of sexual assault.

The man, who is in his 60s, was brought before Letterkenny District Court and will be sent forward to the Circuit Court at a later date.

Evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of the accused man - who cannot be named for legal reasons due to the nature of the charges - was given to the court by way of schedule.

He is charged with eight counts of sexual assault on dates between 2019 and 2022 in Co Donegal.

The charges are contrary to section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990, as amended by Section 37 of the Sex Offenders Act 2001.

Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed that the matter be dealt with on indictment before the Circuit Court. The DPP has also consented to the accused going forward on a signed guilty plea.

Sergeant Doyle added that there were no objections to bail, but conditions were sought.

The man was granted bail on his own bond of €150 nil cash on condition that he sign on twice a week at a Garda Station, be contactable 24-7 on a mobile phone, have no contact whatsoever with any persons involved and commit no further offence.
