Keys handed out as Montpelier development in Dublin 7 reaches milestone

The Montpelier development in Dublin 7 will ultimately deliver 1,046 units with a mixed tenure of social, affordable purchase and cost rental homes

The Montpelier development in Dublin 7 marks a major milestone with the completion of all 379 homes in Phase 1.

Delivered by Dublin City Council in partnership with Tuath Housing and the Department of Housing this regeneration project will ultimately provide 1,046 homes at the former O’Devaney Gardens site . Comprising a mix of housing tenures, Phase 1 includes 139 social, 165 affordable purchase, and 75 cost rental homes.

Tuath is also marking the topping out of a further apartment block, which represents another step closer to a further 189 new cost rental homes due in 2027. There has been significant interest in this development, with 5,279 applications submitted for the first phase of cost rental homes.

New residents include Sara Moore, an Inchicore native who is looking forward to collecting the keys to her home next week. “We are so looking forward to getting our keys. We will still be close to my family, my son’s school and my work, but we will now have a secure place to come home to and will be able to make it our own - and we’ll be able to call the Phoenix Park our new backyard,” she said.

Minister for Housing James Browne TD said these homes come as a result of “unprecedented investment in housing” through a housing action plan. “This is about more than targets or delivery timelines for me, it’s about people and I can’t say that enough. These homes will enable residents to put down roots, build their community here. I want people to grow up and grow old here,” he said.

Montpelier is “not just a housing development,” according to Lord Mayor Ray McAdam, who said this is about “the renewal of a community.” By rebuilding this neighbourhood, he said they are showing “confidence in Dublin’s future” and providing a space for families, workers, and residents where they have the stability to build lives.

Chair of Tuath Housing Richard Pike celebrated the milestone of reaching one-third completion as “a significant step forward and reflects the wider progress being achieved across Tuath’s programme”. Having surpassed delivery of 2,000 cost rental homes this year , he said “the continued progress on site and the handover of new homes are key steps in creating a vibrant community close to the heart of Dublin city centre”.
