There's been a steep rise in incidents of illegal animal carcass dumping in Cavan.

That's according to figures recently revealed by Northern Sound through a freedom of information request submitted to Cavan County Council.

The figures show there have been 12 reports of dead animals being dumped across the county over the past nine months.

That's four times more than last year's total and the highest number of incidents for the past six years.

Sheep, cattle, deer and even fish guts were among the animals that were dumped.

Disposing of the carcasses cost the council almost 700euros since 2020.

Dumping dead animals illegally can spread diseases, pollute local water sources and attract pests.

Padraig Corrigan has been speaking to farmer Hugh Farrell and Cavan SPCA's Tina Boyle to find out what's led to the spike and what can be done to combat it.
