Postal services have been transferred to Dungloe following the closure of Annagry Post Office.

The post office closed last Friday when postmistress Bried McCole retired after 14 years of service. However, the service in Annagry may still be reopened should a postmaster be found.

Postal services have now been transferred to Dungloe, on a three-month basis. Individuals can decide whether to transfer their services to other local post offices, such as Derrybeg.

Fianna Fáil TD Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher has been in contact with An Post since the announcement. “I was reasonably confident that there would be local interest; however, nobody expressed interest before the closing date,” he told Donegal Live.

“An Post has agreed to temporarily transfer the services to Dungloe; however, they are happy to retain services in Annagry if there is local interest. I will continue my efforts, and I am satisfied that the service would be retained in the event of a suitable applicant.”

‘It was just such a lovely job serving you all’ Independent councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig, who has been engaging with the locals, believes that the closure “puts the community at a disadvantage.

“Not everybody has transport and there are people with mobility issues. The loss is huge, massive - the post office was really busy and we depend on that footfall. This is now taking people outside of their own community. I am hoping someone will come forward. I have engaged with local businesses and An Post is keen to engage.”

Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig The independent representative outlined the numerous post office closures in 2018 and 2019, which saw Burtonport (Ailt an Chorráin) and Gortahork (Gort an Choirce) lose their service.

“The government model isn’t working for rural Ireland,” he continued. “We need to increase spending and have the service run by the state.”
