Funding for 'long-awaited' development in Kildare welcomed

Draft plans for the project were first presented back in 2019

Labour Party Cllr Angela Feeney ’s positive comments come after €9 million funding was allocated towards four separate projects across North Kildare.

The funding is part of a €409m national investment, which was announced today by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD (Fianna Fáil).

This was welcomed by Cllr Feeney, who said: “This is fantastic news for Maynooth and for everyone who has campaigned for the Harbour Field to be developed as a high-quality public amenity.”

“I have been supporting and pushing for the development of Harbour Field for many years; back in 2019, when the draft plans were first presented, I welcomed the vision for a park that would provide something for people of all ages, while also making clear that the needs of the wider community had to be reflected in the design.”

Cllr Angela Feeney (Labour Party) | FILE PHOTOGRAPH Cllr Feeney continued: “Since then, I have consistently raised the project at Council [level], sought updates on its progress, supported the Part 8 process and raised practical issues such as flooding at the site.

“More recently, I supported the continued designation of Harbour Field as a priority within Maynooth’s public realm strategy and seconded the call for a clear update and timeline for delivery; this funding gives us the opportunity to finally turn the plans into reality.

“There has been a long road from the early discussions and the original proposals for the site to where we are today.”

She concluded: “I am delighted that we can now look forward to seeing this project delivered.”

Last week, Cllr Feeney made headlines when she urged Kildare County Council to take proactive measures to prevent fish kills from occurring in the Clane-Maynooth Municipal District.
