Caoimhin Treacy The number of 'households' waiting for social housing in Kildare increased by almost 8 per cent in a year, rising from 3,687 to 3,974 by November 2025.

The figures were published in Kildare County Council’s Chief Executive’s Report for July and are drawn from the summary of social housing Assessments 2025.

Nationally, 61,719 households were assessed as qualifying for social housing support and having an unmet housing need as of 3 November 2025.

According to the council’s report, there is “strong demand” for social housing in Kildare among smaller households, including people living alone and single parents.

The housing list includes people from a wide range of backgrounds, with a mix of ages, employment situations, and personal circumstances.

The council said that the assessment will inform what type of homes need to be built, allocation planning, homelessness prevention measures, and its engagement with the Department of Housing regarding funding and support.

Sinn Féin’s national housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin argued that the 61,719 figure understates overall housing need because it does not include households housed through the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) and the Rental Accomodation Scheme (RAS).
