A Kilmacrennan man found in possession of €2,830 of cannabis has been fined.

Mark McBride (23) of 43 Rosemount, Kilmacrennan, was found in possession of the large amount of cannabis at the same address on April 7, 2024.

He was charged on three counts – money laundering in the State, possession of drugs for the purpose of sale or supply and possession of drugs.

The State withdrew the charge on money laundering in the State. McBride was convicted on two possession of drugs charges.

Judge Emile Daly described the cannabis possession as “significant”, warning that in light of the large amount that she could impose a suspended one-month custodial sentence in order to monitor McBride’s behaviour.

Defending solicitor Rory O’Brien said it was being caught with the drugs was a “pivotal point” in his client’s life. He told the court his client has remained sober since the offence.

Mr O’Brien added that his client accepted that he was in the wrong and he asked for leniency. He said McBride had been involved in ‘sale and supply’ to assist himself in obtaining cannabis for his own use.

Judge Emile Daly fined McBride €1,000 with six months to pay.
