Single mother driving without insurance had her vehicle seized by Limerick gardaí

A SINGLE mother who was caught driving without insurance for the second time, has had her car seized by gardaí.

Ewelina Lenard Fernandez, 42, with an address at Station Close, Knocklong, in County Limerick pleaded guilty to driving without insurance on the Tipperary Road, Sandy Lane, Limerick on October 31, 2024.

Limerick District City Court heard that the woman’s vehicle was seized under section 41 of the Road Traffic Act.

Ms Fernandez then neglected to show proof of her car insurance at Bruff Garda Station, which was required of her following the incident.

Solicitor Turlough Herbert, representing the woman, said in a plea of mitigation that Ms Fernandez is in a “very difficult position”.

Mr Herbert stated that Ms Fernandez is “a single mother”, and “responsible for taking the children to school”.

The solicitor said that the woman lives 15 miles away from the school that her children attend, and that her children have autism.

Sergeant Denis Waters outlined to the court that Ms Fernandez has six previous convictions, including one for driving without insurance, one for driving while using a mobile phone, and two for not displaying insurance discs.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican proceeded to convict and fine Ms Fernandez €500, and disqualified her from driving for a period of one year.
