Roundabout improvements have been sought in one County Kildare region in order to improve road safety.

The request was made by a local councillor at the latest Athy Municipal District meeting, which took place on Monday, June 15 last.

During the early stages of the meeting, Labour Party Cllr Aoife Breslin motioned for Kildare County Council (KCC) to carry out works to ‘the layout of the roundabout at the junction of the Kilkenny Road and the Athy Distributor Road’.

According to Cllr Breslin, she wants these works done in order to improve road safety in the region.

Labour Party Cllr Aoife Breslin | PHOTO CREDIT: KILDARECOCO.IE Her motion was seconded by the Mayor of the Municipal District, Fine Gael Cllr Ivan Keatley, who also expressed criticism over the layout of the roundabout.

Replying to Cllr Breslin’s motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: “A design for the proposed works has been completed and is currently going through an approval process with Transport Infrastructure Ireland as the works are on a section of national road.”

KCC also told her: “The intention is to complete these works as soon as this approval is in place.”

Speaking further on the matter, Cllr Breslin claimed that KCC ‘has already spent so much’ money on the roundabout, and yet, ‘there are still problems’ with it.

Cllr Breslin also urged KCC to place the matter on its progress report in order to keep on top of the project.

“I know that resources are tight, but we need to get this project completed,” she emphasised to KCC.
