Killer who went on the run in Donegal wants to return to the North - Donegal News

By Lauren Wall · Donegal News · 12 October 2026

Anderson, aged 29, and his brother are both serving sentences in Maghaberry Prison for the murder of father-of-five, Karol Kelly.

THE DERRY man who was arrested in Donegal after absonding from custody, has expressed his wish to return to the North.

Gary Anderson has been in custody in the Republic after he was arrested by Gardaí hiding out in a mobile home in Fahan last month.

He had been given compassionate leave from Maghaberry Prison to attend his father’s funeral in Creggan, Derry, but went on the run for nine days.

He was found by gardaí on Septembe 23 in a mobile home in Fahan and has been in custody since.

At today’s sitting of Letterkenny District Court, Anderson appeared via videolink from Castlerea Prison.

He is charged that he was present at Fahan Marina Caravan and Campsite, having escaped Maghaberry Prison, Ballinderry Upper, Lisburn, Co Antrim.

The court heard that Anderson had told his solicitor that he is seeking consent to return to the North and serve his sentence there.

However, Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle said he is still awaiting direction from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and said Anderson should remain in Castlerea Prison.

He asked for an adjournment until November 2 and for Anderson to appear via videolink.

Judge Emile Daly ordered that Anderson remain on remand in Castlerea Prison until that date.
