Darragh Murphy A 31-year-old has been jailed for assaulting a man near the entrance to People’s Park in Waterford city.
Conor Manning, who is of no fixed abode, received a three-year sentence for the attack, which left the victim covered in blood and requiring hospital treatment.
On May 4, 2024, gardaí received reports of men fighting in the William Street area of the city, near the entrance to the People’s Park.
Upon arriving at the scene, gardaí met the victim, who had a bad cut and was covered in blood.
The victim told gardaí that he believed the assailant had entered an apartment on William Street.
An investigating garda officer informed the court last week that Manning was abusive to gardaí at the apartment.
He also attempted to force his way past the officers and escape, which led to a scuffle in the building.
Manning was arrested and brought to Waterford Garda Station.
He was on bail at the time he committed the assault and is currently serving a 7 and a half year prison sentence for a separate offence.
Through his defence solicitor, Manning attempted to present a letter of apology to the court last week.
The letter was undated and it was vaguely addressed to ‘the victim’.
Judge O’Kelly rejected the letter, saying that it was “not acceptable to this court”.
