The need for a safe walking route between the Rainbow Ballroom and the village in Glenfarne was highlighted at this week's meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District.

Cllr Eddie Mitchell (Ind) submitted a motion which stated, “I understand that the council have been unsuccessful in securing funding for a footpath along the N16 between the Rainbow and the Village and is now considering including a link as part of the Green Way Project.

“Would the relevant council representative meet with me and a delegation of affected residents to discuss the constraints on the existing roadway and discuss potential progress on a possible safe walking route between the two areas of the village?”

Speaking on the motion, Cllr Mitchell said that, “people with sight or hearing issues walk along this route and have lorries flying past them. It is not acceptable if we don't fix this problem.”

In reply, District Engineer Paul McMahon told the meeting that “a proposed route for the Greenway project should be available by the middle of March.”

A written reply from the council stated that, “The Road Section and Capital Office staff are available to meet with the community reps. Once the work is complete on the greenway project, we can meet and discuss potential progress on a possible safe walking route between the two areas of the village.”
