Church in Kildare could be added to Derelict Sites Register

The condition of the premises was highlighted by a local representative

A Derelict Sites Register file has been opened in relation to one County Kildare church which currently in poor condition.

Kildare County Council (KCC) made the announcement at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which took place on Wednesday, May 20 last.

It was delivered in response to a motion which was submitted by Fianna Fáil Cllr Brian O’Loughlin, in which he requested KCC ‘to add Feighcullen Church to the Derelict Sites Register’.

Cllr O’Loughlin’s motion was seconded by Social Democrats Cllr Chris Pender.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Brian O'Loughlin | Photograph credit: kildarecoco.ie Replying to Cllr O’Loughlin’s motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: “The Town Regeneration Team has opened a Derelict Sites file in respect of this property.”

“Initial investigations into the ownership of the property are currently underway, and statutory Derelict Sites procedures will be initiated,” KCC added.

Speaking further on the site, Cllr O’Loughlin noted that was constructed back in 1829.

He also said the owner has not interacted with the site for the last number of years, and as a result, the church has fallen into a poor state.

According to Cllr O’Loughlin, a number of windows have been broken and there are holes in the roof.

He concluded: “I welcome KCC’s decision to consider the placement of this site on the Derelict Sites Register.”
