TEN-T project to ‘completely transform the connectivity of the region’

A meeting held on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) Priority Route Improvement Project has been described as “extremely positive.”

The €800 million project aims to deliver over 100 kilometres of upgraded roads across three key sections of the county, including the Twin Towns Bypass, Letterkenny to Manorcunningham, and Manorcunningham to Lifford, which links the A5 in Strabane.

A meeting was held with the Minister for Public Expenditure, Jack Chambers TD, Minister of State at the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, Charlie McConalogue TD and Donegal County Council officials.

“Minister Chambers is extremely familiar with the TEN-T Project from his term as Minister of State for Transport in the last government and is aware of how important its delivery is,” Minister McConalogue said.

“The meeting with Minister Chambers and Donegal County Council officials went really well and was extremely positive. It was a timely opportunity to get a progress report on the TEN-T, which recently advanced to the planning stage.

“The TEN-T is a key priority for the government and is a crucial infrastructural development designed to overhaul Donegal’s primary arteries that will ensure economic growth and regional connectivity. Subject to planning approval and funding, it is hoped that construction could commence in late 2028 or early 2029.”

“With ever-rising global instability and uncertainty, where extremism and polarisation are on the rise, it is essential that we can deliver the services and public infrastructure people need and expect,” Minister Chambers said.

“All of us who believe fervently in sensible centrist policies that support job creation and drive the enterprise economy that has served Ireland for so many years understand the challenge we face. It’s a challenge we must overcome and one I am confident we will.

“That is why projects like the Donegal TEN-T, which has the potential to completely transform the connectivity of the region here, are so important and need to be delivered without delay. For me, the ultimate test is what people in communities see and feel - real and tangible benefits of infrastructure delivery.”

Donegal County Council, in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, are developing the TEN-T Priority Route Improvement Project, Donegal.
