A man detected driving at 145km/h during Rally weekend in Donegal has been fined in court.

Stephen McGimpsey was before Letterkenny District Court in connection with an offence on June 18, 2026.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that Gardai were conducting a speed check and McGimpsey, who was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer, was detected at 145km/h in a 100km/h zone at Magheraboy, Letterkenny.

McGimpsey, a 36-year-old with an address at Brandon Grove, Bangor, Co Down, was arrested for dangerous driving.

Sergeant Collins advise the court that McGimpsey was “apologetic” following his arrest. The court heard that the accused man has no previous convictions.

On the basis of a guilty plea, Judge Ciaran Liddy agreed to a reduction of the charge to one of careless driving.
