Drivers in the Midlands are obliged to consider the condition of the road when driving on bad roads.

That is the advice from Inspector Holmes of the Laois-Offaly Roads Policing Unit, who says motorists should drive at an appropriate speed for the road they are on.

His comments come after Tullamore Cllr Neil Feighery sought approval to write to Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien regarding the deteriorating roads in Tullamore.

Cllr Feighery recently raised his concerns about the deteriorating roads in the town and wider area.

As some local roads are built on peat foundations, they regularly sink and often need resurfacing and restoration works.

However, Mr Holmes says there is no such thing as dangerous roads, only dangerous driving behaviour.

He warned that motorists should drive at an appropriate speed for the road they are on.

Cllr Feighery says that although Tullamore attracts many learner drivers, they are not as affected by the issue, as rural roads are more impacted.

Mr Holmes acknowledged the difficulty but reaffirmed the need for road safety education, saying, " I wouldn’t look at it as a disadvantage to do driving lessons and tests on those roads, as those are the type of roads you will encounter on a daily basis.

Mr Holmes says there is no such thing as dangerous roads, only dangerous driving behaviour:
