Father-of-three raises issue of rising childcare costs at Letterkenny meeting

The cost of childcare was amongst the concerns highlighted by the public at Sinn Féin’s cost-of-living meeting in Letterkenny.

After initial speeches by Deputy Dáil Leader and Finance Spokesperson, Pearse Doherty TD and Chief Whip and Spokesperson on Fisheries and the Marine, Padraig MacLochlainn TD, a questions-and-answers session ensued.

Members of the public took the microphone to share how the cost of living is affecting their daily lives and offered suggestions to alleviate the struggle. A father-of-three said his children are young and he is working full-time, as is his wife, and they are struggling to afford childcare.

Teachta Doherty outlined Sinn Féin’s policy to make childcare affordable.

“We want to deliver childcare for €10 a day, €50 a week, and it is absolutely possible. Childcare can be affordable if you have political will, policy and determination and that is what Sinn Féin has.

“We will not give up until that is delivered for every family across the state. Affordable childcare is a centre point of our alternative budget.”

Sinn Féin want to see a mini-budget introduced by the government to address the cost-of-living crisis.
