News PICTURES: New Kilkenny youth initiative launches at historic setting By Reporter Published 5th Apr 2026, 22:00 BST Kilkenny launches Children and Young People’s Plan with major focus on wellbeing and community action Kilkenny Children and Young People’s Services Committee (CYPSC) successfully hosted the official launch of its new Children and Young People’s Plan, alongside two key wellbeing initiatives - Healthy Streets and the Act Belong Commit campaign at the Medieval Mile Museum last week.

The launch brought together key stakeholders, service providers, elected representatives and young people from across the county to mark the milestone for children and young people in Kilkenny.

The launch was officially opened by Cathaoirleach Mary Hilda Cavanagh, followed by a local authority address from Mayor John Coonan.

An overview of the Children and Young People’s Plan was delivered by Anne Marie Stafford, Area Manager with Tusla and Chairperson of Kilkenny CYPSC, outlining a shared vision for improved outcomes for all children and young people up to 24 years old. The plan incorporates over 30 targeted actions across key outcome areas.

These actions focus on supporting children and young people to be active and healthy, achieving in learning and development, safe and protected from harm, experiencing economic security and opportunity, while being connected, respected and supported to contribute to their communities.

The event also marked the launch of two major wellbeing initiatives. One of these was the Healthy Streets Programme, presented by Aisling Dollard (Carlow CYPSC Coordinator), this family-based initiative supports healthier lifestyles through physical activity, nutrition and wellbeing education, empowering families to make positive, sustainable changes.

The other initiative was the Act Belong Commit campaign. Presented by Enya from Comhairle na nÓg, this internationally recognised campaign promotes positive mental health by encouraging people to stay active, connected and engaged in meaningful activities.

The Kilkenny initiative includes a dedicated youth-focused website and practical resources to support wellbeing.

Minister of State, Jennifer Murnane O’Connor TD, attended the launch and delivered a keynote address, highlighting the importance of co-ordinated, community-based approaches to supporting children and young people.

The event also featured performances from young musicians from Colaiste Pobal Osraí Kilkenny, the CBC Trad Band and the CBC Senior Choir, showcasing the talent and creativity of young people in the county.

Speaking at the event, CYPSC Co-ordinator, Dr Leighann Ryan Culleton said: “This launch marks an important step forward for Kilkenny. Our plan reflects a strong shared commitment across services to support children and young people to thrive - with a clear focus on wellbeing, prevention and meaningful participation.”
